Frequently Asked Questions

GI Endoscopy (Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy) is a procedure in which a thin, flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is passed through the mouth to examine the oesophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). It helps diagnose and, in some cases, treat digestive disorders.
Your doctor may recommend GI Endoscopy if you have persistent symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, chronic acid reflux, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, gastrointestinal bleeding, or suspected ulcers. It is also used to investigate abnormal imaging or laboratory findings.
GI Endoscopy is generally well tolerated. Patients are often given a local throat anaesthetic and, when appropriate, sedation to ensure comfort during the procedure. Most patients experience little to no pain and recover quickly afterward.
The procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes, although the total visit may be longer due to preparation and recovery. In most cases, patients can return home the same day after a short observation period. If sedation is used, someone should accompany the patient home as advised by the healthcare team.
